BNA, Atlas BNA

Atlas BNA format is a legacy vector format used with Atlas GIS packages.

To import from BNA format:

  1. Choose File-Import from the main menu.

  2. In the Import dialog browse to the location of the file and double-click on the .bna file desired.

  3. A table and a drawing will be created.

  4. Open the drawing and Immediately launch Assign Initial Coordinate System in the Info pane Component tab to specify  the correct initial projection for the drawing.

Importing the sample file shown in the dialog above results in a drawing of New Zealand as area objects.

BNA files do not contain formatting information for colors.  We have used the Style pane to color the areas and also the Layers pane to color the background a light blue.

Notes

Projections - BNA files do not provide projection information.   We must always manually provide the projection used by the imported drawing by launching Assign Initial Coordinate System in the Info pane Component tab.

Therefore, it is essential we take care to find any available commentaries or metadata information that may accompany the BNA files in use that may tell us the projection used.
