UNIVERSE DESCRIPTION

These files contain a collection of data from the Bureau of the Census and other Federal agencies, such as the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Social Security Administration, as well as several private organizations, such as the American Medical Association and the Elections Research Center. The universe varies from item to item within the files, e.g., all persons, all housing units, all local governments, etc.

SUBJECT MATTER DESCRIPTION

Demographic, economic, and governmental data from both the Federal government and private agencies are presented for multi-area comparisons or single area profiles. Current estimates and benchmark census results are included.

This CD-ROM contains data items on 63 dBASE III™ files: 20 each for States and counties, 16 for cities of 25,000 or more, and 7 for places of 2,500 or more. The data files include all data published for States, counties, cities, and places in the County and City Data Book 1994, as well as a number of items which were not in the book but are included for user convenience.

State and county data files cover the following general topics: age, agriculture, banking, building permits, crime, earnings, education, elections, government, health, households, housing, income, labor force and employment, manufactures, population, poverty, retail trade, services industries, social programs, veterans, vital statistics, and wholesale trade.

City data files include most of the subjects listed for State and county files with the exception of agriculture and elections data plus climate data. Place data files include 33 items from the 1990 Census of Population and Housing on age, education, education, households, housing, income, labor force and employment, population, and poverty.

GEOGRAPHIC COVERAGE

State Files—provide 244 data items for the United States, 50 States and the District of Columbia, and 13 Census State groupings (65 areas in all).

County Files—provide 244 data items for the United States, 50 States and the District of Columbia, and 3,141 counties or equivalents areas defined as of January 1, 1990 (3,193 areas in all).

City Files—provide 216 data items for the 50 States and the District of Columbia, 1070 incorporated places with a 1990 population of 25,000 or more, and 8 Census designated places (CDPs) in Hawaii which have no incorporated places.

Place Files—provide 33 data items for the 50 States and the District of Columbia, 8,510 places (incorporated places and CDPs) with a 1990 population of 2,500 or more, and 2,587 minor civil divisions (MCDs) in the following 12 states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin (11,148 areas in all).

TIME PERIOD COVERAGE

Most data are from the 1990 Census of Population and Housing and 1987 Economic Censuses. There is also 1992 resident population, 1991 crime data, and 1992 election data to name a few.
