Sample Manifold System Views and Dialogs

This page provides a "short form" summary of Manifold System features.  Click on a thumbnail to expand it for a view of the screen shot.  The dialog and console views include various major consoles but still represent only about a tenth of the available dialogs in Manifold.  Complexity is well hidden behind a well-organized system of menus. Most views and consoles in Manifold can be popped open and left "alive" even while work continues in other views and consoles.

Have you teleported into this page from a search engine or one of our introductory pages? Don't miss the GIS User's Page if you are an experienced GIS user, or the Personal Mapping page if you are new to mapping and GIS.

Sample Views, Consoles and Major Dialogs

(The numbers in parentheses show the size of each thumbnail image in Kbytes.)

swiss_map_big.png (164911 bytes)

Map View

162K

See data as a geographic map or CAD diagram. Geographic maps may be projected using a nearly infinite combination of projections, ellipsoids and projection parameters.  Thumbnail shows simple toolbar configuration and layer tabs at the bottom.  This is a complex map with many layers taken from Manifold World.
table_view.png (17006 bytes)

Table View

17K

See data attributes in classic row and column table database presentation. Click open as many Table Views as desired with choice of entire map, a layer, active layer or the Selection. Table Views are dynamically active so that changes in Map View (eg, changing the selection) will show up in Table View and vice versa.  Table View toolbars allow recalculating fields, highlighting some records and recombining them with the Selection, import and export of data, and many other functions.

Unlike "static" table views in MapInfo, Manifold's table view is a dynamic console complete with sophisticated selection toolbars that is automatically updated with changes in Map View or in other Table Views.

spread_sheet.png (37541 bytes)

Manifold Spread Sheet

37K

Any field cell in Table View can contain an ActiveX formula, just like a super spreadsheet, that references other fields. The thumbnail shows a simple, but sophisticated example.

The Table View in back has the Formulas button pushed in so we see the formula in each cell (both columns have the same formula repeated in each record cell).  The Table View in front has the Formulas button pushed out so that the values in each cell are those computed from the formula.

Creating this was easy:  We first created two fields and loaded them with formulas using a simple shortcut (typing once to load into all the cells). The first field uses the Manifold length() function to compute the length of a line.  The second formula uses the first field as an argument to be multiplied by 1.61 to give length in kilometers.   The second field is an integer so it is automatically rounded.

We can use columns with formulas in them just as we would any column.  For example, to get the display in the Table View in front, we shift-clicked on the km column to sort it from  largest value down.

Note the SQL Toolbar at the bottom can use any of the computed spread sheet fields just like any data attribute   field.  Computed fields can be used for labels or any other purpose, just like a regular field.  Screen shot shows the Launch toolbar at the bottom.  After running the SQL toolbar selection, we clicked on the "show selection" button in the foreground Table View to show the selection as highlighted records.  (Since we had previously sorted the records, they are all together at the top of the table.)

form_view.png (13164 bytes)

Form View

13K

See an individual record with all fields as a form. Click open from any Table View or by double-clicking in Map View on any object.  This form view shows that any table View can be resized using Windows standard "drag the border" resizing.

Double-click into any field value to edit it.

results_history.png (50667 bytes)

Results History

50K

"Ticker tape" history of all text results. Includes selectability from within Results History, statistics, histograms and more. Thumnail shows a Results History window with the results of the Correlations solver followed by the Least Squares Line Regression solver.  Clicking on the Least Squares Line icon pops open a plotting sub-dialog that shows the data graphically [lots of options even in the-subdialog, too!].   If desired, we could have scrolled up in Results History to compare this set of results with previous solver results.  Results History can be used as a floating window or as a "docked" window in any size desired.
worldview.jpg (18973 bytes)

World View

19K

Cool 3D world globe showing current map in context. Lots of options (graticule/no graticule, colors, etc).  True 3D that can be spun and rotated with the mouse.  Some users leave World View open on their desktop even when not working with Manifold.
sql_toolbar.png (35456 bytes)

SQL Toolbar

35K

Tool bar for "one liner" simple SQL queries. Pre-loaded with numerous SQL operators, including spatial SQL operators such as "within".  In the screen shot we've loaded the left box with the name of a layer, Oil and Gas Wells.  In the middle box we are choosing "within" and next we will click on a region to load it in the right hand box. Press Select to find all the Oil and Gas wells within the region.  SQL Toolbar makes it easy for anyone to utilize advanced Spatial SQL: just point and click.
gps_console.png (10317 bytes)

gps_console_setup.png (23728 bytes)

GPS Console

11K

24K

Floating, dynamic control panel for getting data from GPS devices, controlling moving maps, tracking GPS and more.

Thumbnails show main GPS console (top) and setup dialogs (bottom).

network_console.png (27893 bytes)

Network Console

28K

Manifold can be used to make maps of networks showing websites, servers, etc.  Network console repeatedly pings objects in the map that have an IP address or host name field and logs the results or sends email or a pager message when an object starts up or shuts down.  Leave Network Console running in Manifold on an otherwise underutilized machine to keep an eye on your websites and networks. Thumbnail shows the Alerts sub-dialog opened for setup.
legend.png (4243 bytes)

Legend

5K

Automatically add formatting samples for any format, autoformatting (thematic mapping) color or style scheme, symbol or other item that appears in the map.

Right click on an object to add the object or its format to the legend.  Drag and drop legend formats from Display Navigator, Autoformat dialog, or other dialogs.

Change text,  style, alignment, colors, fonts and numerous other options from simple menus by double-clicking or right clicking into Legend items.

schemes.png (82509 bytes)

Scheme Manager

81K

"Schemes" are preset combinations of color and formatting that may be applied to entire maps at once.

Schemes make it easy to rapidly format maps that consist of numerous layers.

display_navigator.png (74376 bytes)

Display Navigator

73K

Complex maps often include numerous layers and map objects in different formats. Display navigator makes it easy to turn various classes of objects on and off for display and to add their formats to the Legend.

The thumbnail shows a few layers from the Manifold World European map series.

views_manager.png (52075 bytes)

Views Manager

51K

Manifold provides "named views": pan and zoom the map as desired and give that view a name. Leave the Views Manager open and jump instantly to any view by double-clicking on its name.  Use named Views  in Print Layout, too!
goto_dialog.png (53295 bytes)

GoTo Panel

53K

Manifold can GoTo any lat/lon location, any layer, any map in the workspace, the entire current map, any specific object, an offset from the present location , to the centroid of the current selection, to a named Spot, or to a named View.  A very small, but useful dialog.
