Manifold WorldÔ Digital Map Data Sets- $55 per volume
Over 1000 hours of personnel and
machine time have been invested by manifold.net to produce the Manifold World series of
digital world maps using the highest resolution government sources possible. Manifold World is a 1:1,000,000-scale
digital electronic chart based on the VMAP0 series of digital charts of
the world produced by the United States National Imagery and Mapping Agency
(the successor agency to the US Defense Mapping Agency). VMAP0 is the
enhanced data set that has replaced the Digital Chart of the World in US
military and government usage for detailed thematic maps.

Because VMAP0 was compiled from many different chart sources, the "tiles" that comprise it in the original military version are not always topographically sensible, nor do they represent map features as civilians do. For example, not all roads are evenly split at national boundaries, nor are lakes and other polygonal area features divided into multiple components where they cross national boundaries. Manifold World has been extensively processed to make tens of thousands of topological corrections and to otherwise provide a high accuracy digital chart of the world suitable for general GIS usage.
Manifold World provides a series of Manifold format maps for a specific region. Maps are organized into categories such as Boundaries, Seas and Oceans, Population, Transportation, Utilities, Hydrography, Industry, Elevation, and Physiography. Some regions may include additional or fewer regions depending on how comprehensive the US government's data holdings were for that region. Volume I includes Europe, Australia and Canada in very high detail.
Each region also includes a set of Manifold workspaces that provide Basic, Medium or Full usage of the available maps for that region. These workspaces have been preformatted using a simple and clear cartographic style as seen in the examples on this page.
All maps in the Manifold World series are unprojected maps in "geographic" lat/lon cylindrical presentation. This makes it easy within Manifold to use whatever projection is desired for a particular region with no loss of accuracy. Manifold World is published in Manifold 4.50 format, using standard Microsoft mdb format for data attributes, to assure the widest possible utilization of this data set, even by legacy Manifold installations.
Manifold
World Volume I: Europe, Australia and Canada
The first volume of Manifold
World includes data for Europe, Australia (including New Zealand) and Canada
(including Alaska and Greenland). The European map at above right shows boundaries
and oceanic features from the Europe collection, projected into Lambert
Conformal Conic projection, to show which countries are covered by the Europe
collections.

(upper right): Switzerland with numerous data sets loaded. Formatting
has been changed by the user to use different colors from the default.
Note that these
"overview" illustrations provided here show only two of the many,
highly detailed data sets
associated with each collection. Detail has been deliberately suppressed
so that it is easy to see which countries are included in the various
collections.
Detail (right): Two views of Italy using default Manifold World formatting and showing Display Navigator and Named Views dialogs.
For
high resolution scenes of ypical Manifold World maps with all or many
data sets loaded click on the thumbnails at right and left. These use Manifold
World maps in screen shots that were prepared for use in other parts of the manifold.net
site. For example, the thumbnail at left was prepared to illustrate the GoTo
dialog. It shows Novi Sad in Serbia with the coordinates of bombed Danube
bridges loaded into GoTo dialog.
Manifold World is like a magic carpet that can immediately call up highly detailed maps of any region in the world, and teleport you into a view of that region. The illustration at right shows the region covered by the Australia collection in Manifold World Volume I. It has been projected using the Orthographic projection. All maps are already converted into Manifold format.
11
August Total Eclipse in Europe - We've had a lot of fun converting NASA
eclipse data into spectacular eclipse maps. 11 August 1999 will see the last total eclipse of the Sun that will cross
Western and Central Europe for many decades. The thumbnail at left
shows eclipse duration at three High Gothic cathedrals in France using Manifold
World with a few selected layers. The thumbnail at right shows a
larger view with transportation turned off. Get your free copy of
the Manifold format eclipse umbral path maps and data at the Manifold FTP
servers in the Free Data page.
