This page provides answers for Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) involving an upgrade to Manifold System Release 6.00 from previous Manifold releases.   See the 6.00 Highlights page and the 6.00 Features List page for more information on Release 6.00.

How do I purchase the Upgrade to 6.00?  Visit the Manifold Online Store and buy the Upgrade to 6.00 product that is found in the Software section, page 2 of the Online Store.  You must have a valid 5.50 license for your upgrade purchase to be processed.

I can't remember my Online Store login and password... How can I buy? Re-register using a new login and new password.  If the data you provide (such as your email address and the shipping address) is reasonably similar to that used when you acquired 5.50 your 6.00 upgrade order will be matched to your 5.50 license and your order will be processed without any problems.  If it cannot be matched, Sales will contact you by email to get additional info.

Will 5.50 be continued for sale? No.  5.50 will be discontinued in early July since in all respects 6.00 is a superset of 5.50 at the same price with considerable improvements.

The web site says the upgrade to 6.00 is a "limited time offer"... when does it end?  The $50 upgrade offer is valid only until July 31, 2004. Until July 31, 2004, a Manifold 5.50 licensee may upgrade from 5.50 to 6.00 for only $50.  After July 31, 2004, the price of the 6.00 upgrade will increase to $150 until October 1, 2004, at which point the upgrade offer will be discontinued.  After October 1, 2004, there will be no discounted upgrade offers from 5.50 to 6.00.

Can I purchase the Upgrade to 6.00 if I do not have Manifold 5.50?  No.  You must be a Manifold 5.50 licensee to acquire the Upgrade to 6.00.

Is there a discounted upgrade from 4.50 or 5.00 to 6.00?  No.  There was a discounted upgrade from 5.00 to 5.50 that expired over a year ago.  A user who upgraded to 5.50 could now acquire the upgrade to 6.00 and still save considerable sums over the a new 6.00 license; however, if a user did not take advantage of the 5.00 to 5.50 upgrade when it was offered there is no 5.00 to 6.00 discounted upgrade.

I purchased Manifold 5.50 Professional recently.  Do I have to purchase the $45 upgrade to 6.00 or will it be sent to me automatically?  That depends on when you licensed 5.50. All Manifold users who licensed 5.50 after April 7, 2004, will automatically be sent a 6.00 upgrade at no charge.  The 6.00 CD will be sent to the shipping address that was used for 5.50, and the 6.00 serial number will be sent to the email address used for your 5.50 serial number.

My address changed since April 7 and I have not received the 6.00 upgrade.  What can I do?  If your address changed and you did not notify manifold.net, you should purchase an Upgrade to 6.00 for $45 via the Online Store to generate a new shipment.  Send an email to sales@manifold.net to notify Sales of your purchase and of your former and current address so that the 6.00 upgrade order can be matched to a qualifying 5.50 license and so your address record can be updated.

My address has not changed since April 7 and I have not received the 6.00 upgrade.  What can I do?  6.00 upgrades are shipped by Priority Mail in the United States, by Global Priority Mail to international addresses within those countries that participate in the Global Priority system and by First Class Mail to those countries that do not participate in the Global Priority system.  All three delivery methods are dependent upon the postal service in the US and (for international addresses) within the destination country.   Postal service is not guaranteed and can involve substantial delays.  If your 6.00 upgrade has not arrived within two weeks of the expected delivery date, contact sales@manifold.net to verify that it did ship.  If it still has not arrived within an additional week or two you may wish to consider it lost in transit and order the Upgrade to 6.00 on the Online Store for $45 to generate a new shipment.

I have purchased an Upgrade to 6.00 and have not yet received it.  When should I expect it?  See the question above for shipping information.  Shipments of 6.00 will begin on the week of June 14, 2004 with an enormous backlog of upgrade orders, which may take a week or two to fill.  Even if you ordered the 6.00 upgrade well before June 14 due to the large backlog it might not have shipped until a later date.  Priority mail takes about 3 business days within the US and Global Priority Mail takes about 5 to 7 days for international delivery if there are no delays in Customs.  First class mail can take weeks to deliver to some countries.   If your CD was intercepted by Customs there is no way to predict how long the delay will be.  When your order is processed you will receive a serial number email.  Orders will normally ship within two business days of that serial number email being issued.

If I order more than one upgrade to 6.00 do I have to pay a $5 shipping fee on each?  Yes, if you want a CD for each.  You can order some upgrades "License Only" to get a serial number sent without a CD being sent.

Can I order faster shipping than the Worldwide Upgrade shipping offer?  Yes.  When you order a 6.00 upgrade you can choose a Federal Express shipping option, which will be priced higher.

I have Manifold 5.50 Enterprise Edition.  Do I need to order a special Upgrade to 6.00?  No.  There is just one Upgrade to 6.00 that will automatically upgrade your existing 5.50 installation to the highest license level (Professional, Professional with Debugger or Enterprise) you have licensed.  For example, if you originally licensed 5.50 Professional and then licensed a 5.50 upgrade to Debugger, your 6.00 upgrade will automatically configure itself for a 6.00 Professional with Debugger installation.

Is 6.00 different than 5.50 Enterprise Edition?  That question implies a misunderstanding.  Just like Manifold 5.50 comes in four editions, 5.50 Professional, 5.50 Professional with Debugger,  5.50 Enterprise and 5.50 Universal Edition, Manifold 6.00 also comes in several editions: 6.00 Professional, 6.00 Professional with Debugger,  6.00 Enterprise Edition and 6.00 Universal Edition.  In addition, 6.00 will introduce some new licensing options such as Professional Runtime and Universal Runtime.  

I have 5.50 Professional Edition and I would like to upgrade to 6.00 Enterprise Edition.  How do I accomplish that?  Visit the Online Store and order the Upgrade to 6.00 and also the Upgrade to 6.00 Enterprise product.  Install the Upgrade to 6.00 first (which creates a 6.00 Professional installation) and then follow the Upgrade to 6.00 Enterprise instructions to upgrade your  new 6.00 Professional installation to 6.00 Enterprise.

an I upgrade multiple licenses to 6.00 if I hold more than one 5.50 license?  Do I need an Upgrade to 6.00 for each license? Yes.  If you have ten 6.00 Professional licenses and wish to upgrade all of them to 6.00 Professional you must acquire ten upgrades to 6.00.

Do multiple upgrades to 6.00 qualify for Manifold's quantity discounts? Yes, if you follow the rules for quantity discounts.  Discounts are on a single order basis (they are not cumulative) and orders qualifying for discounts must be prepaid by wire transfer or check.

Can I run both 5.50 and 6.00 on the same machine?  No. Installing 6.00 will automatically uninstall 5.50.

Does 6.00 read 5.50 .map files?  Yes.

Can 5.50 read 6.00 .map files?  No.  We strongly recommend that users upgrade all licenses to 6.00 to avoid a situation where their 5.50 license users will not be able to read .map files created with 6.00.

Is the 6.00 Upgrade downloadable?  No. It must shipped. If you have multiple 5.50 licenses to upgrade you can upgrade them all from a single CD if you acquire 6.00 Upgrade licenses (using the "License Only" shipping method) for each 5.50 system.

Do I get a new serial number and five more Activation keys with the 6.00 Upgrade? Yes. When the 6.00 Upgrade is processed, your 5.50 serial number will be revoked and a new 6.00 serial number will be generated and emailed to you. Your new 6.00 serial number will work for 30 days from the date of issue without an Activation key. It can be used to fetch five Activation keys. The 6.00 Upgrade gives you a "fresh start" with 6.00, just as if you had ordered a new 6.00 license.

Can I return the 6.00 Upgrade if I change my mind? No. The 6.00 Upgrade is not refundable, nor can 5.50 serial numbers that are revoked as part of the 6.00 Upgrade be restored. If you are not sure you want to upgrade to 6.00, buy a 6.00 license at the regular, list price.

Are there separate upgrades for 5.50 Professional, Professional with Debugger, Enterprise and Universal editions?  No. The same "6.00 Upgrade" will automatically search your customer record with manifold.net to provide a new 6.00 serial number that matches your current license level. For example, if your qualifying record is a 5.50 Enterprise Edition license, buying the "6.00 Upgrade" product will automatically generate a 6.00 Enterprise serial number upgrade. (The same as a previous question, asked a different way.)

I have Business Tools or Surface Tools or the Option Pack. Is there a 6.00 Upgrade for these?  It is not necessary. The 6.00 Upgrade will automatically upgrade your 6.00 installation so that any 5.50 Business Tools, Surface Tools or Option Pack serial numbers will automatically work, but the extensions will now operate at the 6.00 level. You do not have to order anything addition to upgrade the extensions.

If I have a mix of 5.50 Professional and 5.50 Enterprise licenses and only order 6.00 Upgrade for some of the licenses, what happens? The 6.00 Upgrade license program is heavily discounted to encourage upgrades of an entire multi-license installation. Part of the simplification that goes into providing such a great discount is that the 6.00 Upgrade server generates the new 6.00 serial number based on whatever non-upgraded 5.50 license it encounters first in the customer's license record. If you've ordered a mix of 5.50 Professional and Enterprise licenses in the past, it is therefore not predictable if you only order a single 6.00 Upgrade whether the upgrade server will first encounter a Professional or Enterprise license. Therefore, if you only order a single 6.00 Upgrade you might end up with an upgrade to 6.00 Professional or you might end up with an upgrade to 6.00 Enterprise. 

Can I upgrade only some 5.50 licenses and not others? Yes, if you are willing to take the Upgrade server's assignment of 6.00 licenses as they are generated. For example, if you have 25 licenses for 5.50 Professional and you order three 6.00 Upgrade licenses, the server will pick three of your 5.50 Professional serial numbers, revoke them, and provide three new 6.00 Professional serial numbers. 

If I have multiple 5.50 licenses, does the 6.00 Upgrade notify me which specific serial numbers were used? No. It simply reports the edition that is upgraded.

Is there a reduced cost "Upgrade to 6.00 Runtime" available?  No. If you have a regular 5.50 license there is no way to save cost by upgrading that to 6.00 and simultaneously converting the license to a Runtime license. 

I bought Manifold 5.50 on April 6, 2004. Do I get a discount? No. Regrettably, every time-limited discount program must have a boundary and for this one it is April 7, 2004.

Why is the upgrade offer a limited time offer?  Experience shows that the Manifold community overall benefits when large numbers of users move to a new release right away. There are three main effects: First, a special production line can be set up to ship large volumes of upgrade units at a very low cost, thus reducing cost for everyone. Second, a fast transition means there is immediate expertise to help new users available in the community for Internet forums like georeference.org and Manifold-L. Third, a strong base of 6.00 users provides lots of feedback that makes the first Service Pack a much stronger product. An improved Service Pack has more to do with new features than it does bug fixing. When hundreds of new features are introduced many people will contribute wishlist items for minor adjustments or additional capabilities that the new features inspire. Having wishlist items in hand early on makes it possible to tune the first Service Pack so the entire release is more user friendly and more powerful. Users who upgrade to 6.00 in the first 45 days make all the above possible, so they get a very low price on the upgrade.

What is new in the extensions for 6.00?  In addition to numerous small items, Business Tools now has the Topology Factory tool and Surface Tools now has a Visible Area dialog for finding visibility zones.

Does 5.50 Geocoding Data work with 6.00?  Yes.

What is the 6.00  Geocoding Data based on? The US Bureau of the Census's TIGER/Line 2003 data set.

Can I get 6.00  Geocoding Data on CD? Not at the present time. The data set is too large to fit on a single CD so a DVD is being used. 

I have a 5.50  Academic License - How do I upgrade that to 6.00?  Order the Upgrade to 6.00 for your institution and then after you receive the CD send an email to sales@manifold.net asking for your 5.50 Academic License to be upgraded to 6.00.

I have a 5.00 or 4.50 Academic License - How do I upgrade that to 6.00? Order 6.00 Professional and then after you receive the CD send an email to sales@manifold.net asking for your 5.50 Academic License to be upgraded to 6.00.
