Using RSS for Update Notification

Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is a technology that allows you to gather new information without having to manually visit web sites. Manifold System will automatically check for updates when you launch Manifold; however, if you don't use Manifold frequently and would like a backup way of hearing about announcements, RSS is a great way to do so.

When using RSS to learn of updates you still need an Internet connection and you still have to read the RSS feed from time to time to learn of new announcements. However, since most people use Internet browsers on a daily basis and checking an RSS feed in most browsers is a simple click, RSS can provide a convenient way to follow new Manifold announcements.

The easiest way to use RSS to learn about backups is to use your Internet browser as an RSS reader to notify you when a new announcement is posted to the Announcements section of the Manifold user community forum at georeference.org. Here's how:

For Internet Explorer (IE) Users:

The above process will add an RSS Feeds button to your IE favorites. Click on the Feeds button in the favorites to see changes that have happened in the Announcements section of the forum.

For Firefox Users:

The above process will add an RSS bookmark to your Firefox toolbar. Click on that book mark to see what changes have happened in the Announcements section of the forum.

Standalone RSS Readers

As an alternative to using Internet browsers to read RSS feeds is to use a standalone RSS reader. RSS readers can be traditional Windows applications like RSS Bandit or web applications like Google Reader. RSS readers must be told a URL from which to grab information. To subscribe to the announcements web feed using a standalone RSS reader, use the following URL:

Important: Manifold technical support does not support RSS readers. This page provides advice that has helped users with typical RSS readers. Your particular installation may be different. If so, please consult your RSS reader's tech support resources for assistance.
