Manifold System Release 8.00 Product Download Installation Instructions Build 8.0.19 - 26 August 2010 Copyright (c) 1997 - 2010 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS -------------------------------------------------- Manifold Release 8 cannot be installed or run without a Manifold Release 8 serial number. Purchase a Release 8 serial number for the Manifold edition you desire from the Manifold Online Store. Installing Manifold is mostly about updating your Windows system. Installing Manifold itself is a snap. These instructions tell you how to download Manifold and install it. Manifold downloads provide Manifold System without any sample data or any of the other contents of the Manifold DVD. If you want the DVD, you must purchase the Manifold 8.00 DVD (Media Only) product from the Online Store. Users of the Geocoding Tools extension are advised that the Manifold US Geocoding Database provided on the Manifold DVD is NOT available by download: you must purchase the DVD to acquire the US Geocoding Database. The US Geocoding Database is required by some features provided in the Geocoding Tools extension. There is no change in the Geocoding Database from the 7x DVD to the 8.00 DVD. If you have a 7x DVD you may install and use that Geocoding Database with Release 8.00. Before installing this edition of Manifold on a computer, please uninstall any earlier Manifold System installations using the Windows Control Panel's "Add or Remove Programs" applet. Earlier versions of Manifold System cannot be run on the same system simultaneously with this release of Manifold System. Note: Windows Installer sometimes gets confused when uninstalling packages. If you encounter any error messages when uninstalling prior Manifold installations, please see the link to Windows Installer Problems on the Support page in the manifod.net web site. LOGIN AS ADMINISTRATOR -------------------------------------------------- If you are using Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP or Windows 2000, login to Windows using the Administrator account. Use the Administrator account for all installation and activation steps below. * Do not use some other account you believe has Administrator privileges. Use the actual Administrator account. This is especially important in Vista. * See the Support page on the manifold.net website for tips on locating the Administrator account in Vista if you don't know how to find it. * If using Windows XP Home in default configuration any user login with "Computer administrator" rights is OK. 2. DOWNLOAD THE MANIFOLD INSTALLATION FILE -------------------------------------------------- Download the most recent Manifold installation zip file for your version of Windows from the Product Downloads page at: http://www.manifold.net/updates/downloads.shtml * If you have a Manifold x64 serial number and you are running x64 Windows, download the x64 installation zip file: Example: manifold-8.0.19-x64.zip * All other users should download the standard, 32-bit installation zip file: Example: manifold-8.0.19.zip * Release 8.00 is updated fairly frequently. The Product Downloads page will provide links to the latest downloads, which may have slightly different build numbers than the above examples. 3. UNZIP THE DOWNLOADED FILE -------------------------------------------------- Unzip the downloaded zip file into a convenient location. This creates a Microsoft installer .msi file, a copy of this installation.txt file, and the release notes .txt file. * If there are any errors when unzipping, the downloaded file was damaged during download or was not completely downloaded. Try again. Downloaded files are approximately 80 MB for the standard, 32-bit file and over 100 MB for the 64-bit file. * If your Internet connection does not allow you to download such large files without error, purchase a Manifold 8.00 DVD (Media Only) product from the Online Store to obtain the installation on DVD. * No tech support is provided for problems with downloads. If you have a problem with a download, buy the DVD and install from the DVD. 4. INSTALL INTERNET EXPLORER -------------------------------------------------- Install Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE 5 or more recent) if it is not yet installed on your computer. Most Windows computers already have IE installed. * You do not need to actually use IE if you prefer a different browser; however, installing IE will update various parts of your Windows system to support use of .NET. If you don't want to use IE just install it to make the .NET Framework happy and then forget about it and use whatever browser you prefer. * You can get the latest download for IE from Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie 5. INSTALL .NET FRAMEWORK -------------------------------------------------- Install Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or more recent. * Some Microsoft products will install the .NET Framework, so you might not need to do this. * You can get the latest download for the .NET framework from Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/net/ (see the Download link on that page) * Drill down through the above page and get the ".NET Framework Redistributable Package" for your operating system. Note that there are different .NET Framework redistributable packages for 32-bit x86 Windows and 64-bit x64 Windows. Download the correct package for your version of Windows and install it. 6. UPDATE WINDOWS -------------------------------------------------- Update your Windows installation with the latest Microsoft updates and latest Microsoft service pack for your version of Windows. 7. INSTALL MANIFOLD -------------------------------------------------- * You MUST be logged in as Administrator, especially in Vista. * Make sure your computer system's date and time are reasonably accurate. * Close all other programs before beginning installation, including any virus checking programs, "uninstall" programs or any other programs running in background. To install Manifold, double-click on the .msi file that was created when you unzipped the downloaded file in step 3 above. * If you have a Manifold x64 serial number and you are running x64 Windows, double-click the x64 installation .msi file: manifold-8.0.19-x64.msi * All other users should double-click the 32-bit installation .msi file: manifold-8.0.19.msi * Before launching Manifold for the first time, read the Activation help topic at http://www.manifold.net/doc/activation_keys_and_serial_numbers.htm * Do not waste Activation keys. Read the above topic to get the most out of your license. 8. ENTER SERIAL NUMBER FOR MANIFOLD SYSTEM -------------------------------------------------- Logged in as Administrator, launch Manifold. The first time Manifold launches it will ask you for a serial number. Enter the Release 8 serial number sent to you in the serial number email for your license. Copy the serial number from the serial number email and paste it into the serial number box to enable Manifold to launch. * If it is less than 30 days since the serial number was issued, you will not need to get an Activation key. If it is more than 30 days since the serial number was issued, you will need to get an Activation key to enable Manifold to launch. * You MUST be logged in as Administrator, especially in Vista. * If you need any assistance with installation or Activation, please see the Activation Support link in the Support page on the manifold.net web site. 9. ENTER SERIAL NUMBERS FOR ANY EXTENSIONS -------------------------------------------------- After Manifold launches, if you have licensed extensions such as Business Tools, Geocoding Tools or Surface Tools, turn on those extensions by choosing (in the main Manifold menu) Help - Activate Extension. Enter the serial number for the extension into that dialog. Manifold will restart and the extension will now be enabled. * If it is more than 30 days since the serial number was issued, you will need to get an Activation key to enable the extension. * When using Universal or Ultimate editions there is no need to enter serial numbers for extensions - With Universal and Ultimate editions, entering the single, main serial number turns on all extensions as well as the main license. 10. READ THE DOCUMENTATION -------------------------------------------------- Manifold is straightfoward to learn if you read the documentation in the recommended order. It is very difficult to learn if you do not read the documentation. Avoid frustration: read the documentation. Do not skim - actually read it. * Launch Help from the Windows Start Button - All Programs - Manifold System - Manifold System 8.0 Help * Read the first three topics: "Welcome," "Read Me First" and "32-bit and 64-bit Manifold Editions." * Read the topics in the Introduction chapter and in the Examples and Tutorials chapter. * Do not waste Activation keys. Read the "Activation Keys and Serial Numbers" and "Maintaining Your Manifold License" topics to get the most out of your license. 11. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FREE UPDATES -------------------------------------------------- If you are connected to the Internet, Manifold will let you know when an update is available when you launch Manifold. Make sure you are logged in as Administrator and then follow the instructions on the Updates page to download and install the new update. Updates will fix bugs and often will add valuable new features. Even if you don't use Manifold regularly, you can still find out about new updates by using RSS to subscribe to the Announcements section of the online user community forum. PARTICIPATE ONLINE -------------------------------------------------- Participate in the online forum at http://forum.manifold.net to have discussions and share information with other Manifold users around the globe. The forum is a great setting to ask questions of other users and to help out beginners once you gain expertise. 13. PURCHASE TECHNICAL SUPPORT IF YOU NEED IT -------------------------------------------------- Your Manifold license does not include technical support. Manifold technical support is provided by email and it is not free: every question asked of tech support, no matter how trivial, requires a support token. Tokens are very inexpensive, but they are not free. Experience shows that users who read the documentation and who participate online will never use technical support. Just in case, most Manifold licenses are provided with two prepaid tokens for standard tech support by email.
